Situated on a peninsula marking the center of North Carolina's Lower Coastal Plain, Pamlico County is a rich environment of land and water.  A variety of habitats are found throughout the area, including open sound water, marshlands, and mixed pine and hardwood forests.  Wildlife is abundant.

Small Business

It is safe to say that the economic engine of Pamlico County is driven mostly by small businesses, many of them multi-generational family owned concerns.  The isolation of the county in the past induced the residents to become entrepreneurs to meet their family and community needs.  This tradition continues today.  New small businesses are being added to the economic base, providing services and products needed by residents.

The County is a member of the regional Eastern Carolina Council of Governments which is one of the 17 regional North Carolina Councils of Governments established by the NC General Assembly for the purpose of regional planning and administration.  With headquarters in New Bern, it serves Pamlico County as well as Onslow, Duplin, Wayne, Green, Lenoir, Jones, Craven, and Carteret counties.

Pamlico county is served by one county-wide school system for grades K-12, Arapahoe Charter School  for grades 1-8, and by Pamlico Community College.
